April 1st Fundraiser a Success

Thank you to everyone who came out to the fundraiser at Mitzi’s Sister on April 1st.  With your help we were able to raise over $1300 that is going directly towards the purchase of the ambulances.  ”All But Over” and “The F Holes” did a great job at filling in last minute after one of the scheduled acts broke up the night before the show.  They entertained the crowd and were a lot of fun.  Thank you for donating your time.

What can we say about “KC Roberts and the Live Revolution”?  When they heard about the scheduling problem, they volunteered to play two sets.  The guys in this band are great people.  Instead of playing two sets, though, they played straight through and kept the audience dancing late into the night.  With a full horn section and a tight band, KC Roberts played a set that people will be talking about for some time.

We also need to thank DJ Machetero for keeping the vibe alive until past 2am.  The venue was great, it was packed, the drinks were flowing and a good time was had by all.  Most importantly we are one step closer to getting these much needed vehicles to the people of El Salvador.

Thank you!!!!

A Great Show for a Great Cause

On April first The Caravan of Hope is hosting a fundraiser at Mitzi’s Sister 1554 Queen Street West (West of Lansdowne).

The event will be a great one as we have confirmed two great acts (with more to come).

KC ROBERTS AND THE LIVE REVOLUTION is an 8 piece funk orchestra with an animated horn section, two knockout female back up vocalists, and a rhythm section built to make you move.  Winner of the Independent Music Awards 2007 Best Live Act, the band blends funk and jazz with contemporary hip hop, house, jungle and rock.  They have shared the stage with The Black Eyed Peas, Talib Kweli, Rihanna, The Pocket Dwellers, Jim Cuddy, and others.  THIS BAND WILL MAKE YOU MOVE! http://kcroberts.ca/

About the cause:

The Caravan of Hope is purchasing 13 decommissioned ambulances and the City of Toronto will be donating one as well.  We are fortunate to be living in a  part of the world where our ambulances are sold off after a 54 month service period to ensure a high level of emergency vehicles.  So the Caravan is purchasing some of these vehicles and driving them to El Salvador.  As it stands, El Salvador has 4 ambulances serving the general public.  All 4 of those ambulance have been provided by Toronto, so let’s keep up this up and build a good reputation of helping Latin America.

THIS IS NOT CHARITY! It’s solidarity! We are building a medical infrastructure for an entire nation.  We are not simply giving poor people something to eat, we are helping them develop a system that will ensure that the people of El Salvador will be self sufficient in the future.  There are no ulterior motives here, we have no employees in this organization, and all your donations will go towards the purchase of the 13 ambulances.  All the musicians have volunteered their time so that the money collected at the door will go directly to the cause.

Thursday, April 1, 2010 (Remember that Friday is a holiday!!!)
$10 at the door  (additional donations welcome)

“Not My Dog” fundraiser a huge success

The February 27th fundraiser held at Not My Dog was a great success.  The bar was at capacity and the music was funky.  A big thank you to the “DCM Trio” for opening the show.  And of course, a big thank you to “Hot Karl and his Cincinnati Bowties” for Headlining the show and donating their time.  The money that was raised would not have been collected had these bands not donated their time and played such an epic show.  Thank you to Daniel, manager of the bar, who procured a percentage of the bar’s take and has donated that to the Caravan of Hope.  Thank you to all who were in attendance and also to those who couldn’t make it to the show but donated online.  Your contributions are much appreciated.

Upcoming Fundraising Event

On Saturday February 27, 2010 Not My Dog will host a fundraiser for The Caravan of Hope.

The show will be a great one as the last fundraiser held there was a great success managed to raise funds for relief efforts in the Philippines after Typhoon Ondoy hit. At that fundraiser, people were blown away at the rock stylings of Hot Karl and the Cincinnati Bowties (see http://basicsnewsletter.blogspot.com/2009/11/rock-to-rescue.html for more info). Well, the band will be back again to play a show that will not disappoint. This time they will be joined by a talented jazz/funk trio that will kick off the night’s festivities.  In addition, the bar will once again donate a percentage of the money earned that night.

So book the day off, come watch an amazing show, have a few drinks, and have a great time while knowing that the money you donate is going to a good cause. If you cannot make it, please come back in a few days time and donate what you can using the donate button on the main page.

We are asking that people donate $5 or $10 at the door, but the event is ‘pat what you can’.  Not My Dog is located at 1510 Queen Street West (just west of Lansdowne).  The show will begin at 9:30pm.
